Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator do seem like similar programs, but do actually provide a necessary and unique service. While Photoshop is better used to edit raster images that are pre-existant, Illustrator is best when used to create new vector-based graphics that need to be scaled up or down. Images from Ps will become pixelated when resized, while ones from Ai will simply recalculate the mathematical equations that the image is based on. Photoshop and Illustrator are both useful, industry-standard programs used for professional work, but in different circumstances.
